BEAR X BEAR is a collaborative project that began on January 1, 2023—>between twin artists A+B. This video compresses 365 daily drawings and collages into 3.5 minutes.
Every morning: Twin A draws while Twin B collages. Inspired by the work of John Evans and Ray Johnson, we document moments of spontaneity and curiosity, viewing this playful process as a visual record of our shared experiences and experimentation. Through the act of twinning every drawing and collage, we create a parallel portrait that underscores the importance of making & holding space for each other.
The bear is a reoccurring figure in our work, a recognizable animal that looms large in twin folklore and our childhood. In some cultures, bears are symbols of strength, power, fertility & signs of good luck. We explore the homographic nature of "bear," encompassing both noun and verb forms, to symbolize the dual act of creation and bearing witness to and for one another.
Each bear is 2 X 3 inches- first vectorized using Illustrator, drawn and cut from file folders using a Cricut machine, then hand stamped. Every pair is individually scanned and the video alternates between scans of TWIN A’s drawings and TWIN B’s collages. This daily project chronicles the minutiae of the world around us-- sparking new ideas, patterns & pathways that keep us moving forward in our creative process. We hope this video inspires others to create their own daily practice.
