Working at a [twin-size] scale 40”x 86” references the cultural materiality of twinness and speaks to Sara Ahmed’s realization that, “The personal is structural.” Twin is both singular and plural, used to describe both person(s) and object(s). The standard [twin] bed is a universal, ubiquitous, and familiar framework we utilize to examine themes of individuality, otherness, and liminality.
Each 5x5 canvas square is punctuated with the repetition, sequencing, and spacing of hand-typed letters, numbers, symbols & sewn stitches. Each visual poem is doubled, inviting the viewer to actively seek and find patterns & pairs- just like in a game of memory, when two elements are identified, a sense of wholeness and equilibrium is established.
